Genius Quotes of Galileo Galilei

Virtuoso Quotes of Galileo Galilei Italian designer and cosmologist, Galileo Galilei was conceived in Pisa, Italy on February 15, 1564, and passed on January 8, 1642. Galileo has been known as the Father of the Scientific Revolution. The logical upset alludes to a timeframe (generally from 1500 to 1700) of incredible headway in the sciences that tested the conventional convictions about mankinds spot and relationship with the universe held by strict requests. On God Scriptures To comprehend the statements of Galileo Galilei concerning God and religion we need to comprehend the occasions Galileo lived in, a period of change between strict conviction and logical explanation. Galileo got his advanced education at a Jesuit cloister starting at eleven years old, strict requests gave one of only a handful barely any wellsprings of cutting edge instruction around then. The Jesuits clerics established an incredible connection with the youthful Galileo, to such an extent that at seventeen years old he declared to his dad that he needed to turn into a Jesuit. His dad promptly expelled Galileo from the cloister, not needing his child to seek after the unfruitful vocation of turning into a priest. Religion and science were both entwined and at chances during Galileos lifetime, the late sixteenth century and mid seventeenth century. For instance, a genuine conversation among scholastics around then, was about the size and state of damnation as delineated in the sonnet Dantes Inferno. Galileo gave a generally welcomed address on the point, including his logical supposition about how tall Lucifer was. Thus, Galileo was given a situation at the University of Pisa dependent on ideal audits of his discussion. Galileo Galilei stayed a significantly strict man through his lifetime, he found no contention with his otherworldly convictions and his investigations of science. Be that as it may, the congregation found clash and Galileo needed to reply to charges of blasphemy in chapel court more than once. At the age of sixty-eight, Galileo Galilei was pursued for blasphemy for supporting the science that the earth turned around the sun, the Copernican model of the nearby planetary group. The Catholic church upheld the geocentric model of the nearby planetary group, where the sun and the remainder of the planets all turn around a focal stationary earth. Dreading torment because of the congregation inquisitors, Galileo made an open admission that he had been off-base to have said that the Earth moves around the Sun. In the wake of making his bogus admission, Galileo unobtrusively murmured reality: And yet, it moves. With the fight among science and church that happened during Galileos lifetime as a top priority, consider the accompanying statements from Galileo Galilei about God and the sacred writings The Bible demonstrates the best approach to paradise, not the way the sky go.I don't feel obliged to accept that a similar God who has invested us with sense, reason, and keenness has proposed us to swear off their use.It is without a doubt hurtful to spirits to make it a blasphemy to accept what is proved. It vexes me when they would compel science by the authority of the Scriptures, but then don't view themselves as bound to answer reason and experiment.I imagine that in the conversation of common issues we should start not with the Scriptures, however with examinations, and demonstrations.By denying logical standards, one may keep up any paradox.Mathematics is the language with which God has composed the universe. What ever the course of our lives, we ought to get them as the most noteworthy blessing from the hand of God, in which similarly rested the ability to do nothing whatever for us. Without a doubt, we ought to acknowledge mishap in thanks as well as in boundless appreciation to Providence, which by such methods separates us from an exorbitant love for Earthly things and raises our psyches to the heavenly and celestial. On Astronomy Galileo Galileis commitments to the study of cosmology included; supporting Copernicuss see that the Sun was the focal point of the close planetary system, not the Earth, and propelling the utilization of the recently imagined telescope by watching sun spots, demonstrating that the Moon had mountains and cavities, finding the four moons of Jupiter, and demonstrating that Venus experiences stages. The sun, with each one of those planets spinning around it and reliant on it, can in any case mature a lot of grapes as though it had nothing else known to man to do.The Milky Way is nothing else except for a mass of multitudinous stars planted together in bunches. The Study of Science Galileos logical accomplishments incorporate creating: an improved telescope, a pony controlled siphon to raise water, and a water thermometer. Realities which from the start appear to be unrealistic will, even on insufficient clarification, drop the shroud which has concealed them and standâ forth in stripped and straightforward beauty. In inquiries of science, the authority of a thousand does not merit the modest thinking of a solitary individual.Where the faculties bomb us, reason must advance in.Nature is tireless and unchangeable, and it is impassive with regards to whether its shrouded reasons and activities are justifiable to man or not. With Regards to Philosophy I have never met a man so uninformed that I couldnt take in something from him.We can't show individuals anything; we can just assist them with finding it inside themselves.Passion is the beginning of genius. There are the individuals who reason well, yet they are incredibly dwarfed by the individuals who reason seriously.

Analysis of Conformity and Group Influence in Twelve Angry Men free essay sample

Examination of Conformity and Group Influence in Twelve Angry Men Introduction The movie â€Å"Twelve Angry Men† coordinated by Sidney Lumet delineates numerous social mental standards. The strained, holding storyline that happens during the 1950s highlights a gathering of hearers who must choose consistently whether a youngster is liable or guiltless in the homicide of his dad. Toward the start, eleven of the twelve legal hearers casted a ballot blameworthy. Step by step, through some warmed conversation, the legal hearers are influenced to a not-liable decision. Upon assessment, the film features social brain science speculations in zones of congruity and gathering impact. Speculations and Application Conformity, a change in one’s conduct or conviction to relate with others (Myers, Spencer, amp; Jordan, 2009), is point of fact perilous with regards to this film. â€Å"Twelve Angry Men† shows two kinds of social impacts that are the grounds of the jurors’ need to put together their choices with respect to the choices of individual legal hearers in the room: enlightening social impact and regulating social impact. We will compose a custom article test on Examination of Conformity and Group Influence in Twelve Angry Men or on the other hand any comparative subject explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page As per enlightening social impact, one adjusts in light of the fact that they accept other’s perspectives or comprehension of an unsure circumstance is more predominant or convincing than their own. Regularizing social impact expresses that people acclimate in light of the fact that they want to pick up endorsement and keep away from dismissal from others. A great case of congruity uncovers itself directly from the earliest starting point of the movie after the accused’ preliminary dismisses. The twelve members of the jury accumulate in a little, stodgy room and take a starter vote by a display of approval. Regulating social impact is portrayed by a few of the members of the jury who appeared to be uncertain of their vote yet in the end yield to the weight of the gathering and vote blameworthy. Since this vote is taken transparently, these people maybe feel slanted to make their choice with the greater part with an end goal to abstain from seeming freak. This is specific in the line judgment study done by Solomon Asch. Like 37% of members in Asch’s analyze, the more reluctant legal hearers decide to settle on a choice that corresponds with the larger part ven however they are encountering anxiety and struggle with this choice (Walker amp; Andrade, 1996). Maybe the intensity of the need to feel acknowledged is generally clear in the character of member of the jury number two, a somewhat compliant and reluctant person, who during a few events of being stood up to by increasingly solid willed or antagonistic legal hearers, shows fast retreat in his unobtrusive assessments. Enlighten ing social impact is additionally evident in â€Å"Twelve Angry Men†. Hearer number twelve, a sharp looking, publicizing businessperson for â€Å"Rice Pops† displays a character that is effectively influenced by persuading contentions from the two sides. He first changes his vote from blameworthy to not liable after legal hearer number five’s showing with the switchblade just to change his vote again after he is overpowered with â€Å"evidence that he can't organize all together. † His failure to clarify his purposes behind his choices to change his votes shows the entanglement of the circumstance just as his own sentiments of ineptitude (Myers, Spencer, amp; Jordan, 2009). Rather, member of the jury number twelve depends on the contentions of different legal hearers and changes his votes as indicated by the believability of other’s decisions. Gathering Influence There is no uncertainty that individuals are regularly helpless to congruity. In any case, another more intensive glance at â€Å"Twelve Angry Men† uncovers something other than social impacts. We keep on perceiving how mindless conformity, bunch polarization, and minority impact impacts every single character. Let us not ignore the conspicuous truth that there is one key individual all through this film. In the event that he had not withstood his choice to talk about the preliminary further, there would have been no point in the film. Truth be told, without a nonconformist among the gathering, the attendants is more than prone to take part in mindless compliance, a hypothesis that recommends a kind of reasoning that abrogates what is practical for bunch solidarity. The impact of the freak member of the jury has permitted, in particular, an introduction to varying feelings. Attendant number eight, our freak member of the jury, ends up being a powerful minority impact. His consistency in his feelings for a reasonable appraisal of the preliminary and his relentless, yet target certainty makes him a ground-breaking one man impact on the group’s extreme choice (Sloan, Berman, Zeigler-Hill, amp; Bullock, 2009). End â€Å"Twelve Angry Men† features the delicacy of equity, yet in addition the blemishes of human instinct. We would believe that twelve men, however with various foundations yet with an apparently decent handle of the circumstance and sound personalities, would meet up and give a reasonable and just decision. In any case, the film has surely exhibited the perils and impediments of congruity and gathering impact. In the spot of these men, we are presumably the same than they are. Not very many of us would wind up in the position played by the degenerate legal hearer and it would have been, of our very doing, an unavoidable capital punishment on a perhaps honest youngster. A consciousness of these social brain research hypotheses is significant and fundamental in the comprehension of why we think and act the manner in which we do. Works Cited Myers, D. G. , Spencer, S. Standardization of Science The Benchmark of An Educated Society

Question: Depict the Strengths and shortcoming of the normalization and of the considerable number of premises andThen the investigation of language and talk utilized will be assessed? Answer: Qualities Weakness Analysis Reason 1: The investigation of sciences should be considered as a scholarly just as a social undertaking wherein the human insight is applied to finding how the world functions. Accordingly, the investigation of science ought to be given a critical spot in all the educational plans where logical proficiency is one of the points. It should be considered in such manner that when the individuals know about the reality how do researchers showed up logical ends, and are likewise mindful of the restrictions related with such ends, the individuals are bound to respond keenly to the cases made by signs and simultaneously, more averse to dismiss these cases or to acknowledge these cases uncritically. A comprehension of the manner in which science works, alongside the essential stock of major logical ideas can permit the obtaining of all the more learning regarding the matter later on. For the most part the picture of science is misshaped in the psyches of the individuals. There are a few soun d system types and fantasies related with science in the psyches of the individuals. These can't be dispersed if the investigation of signs just spotlights on the hypotheses and ideas of science alone. In this manner the investigation of science ought to be made unequivocal piece of the educational program despite the fact that science is just a little piece of scholarly human venture. Reason 2: Science has uncovered to us a great deal about the world. Because of science, we can see, pretty much, what the truth is and what the powers that affect the stuff of presence are. Simultaneously, conceivable and observationally stable premise had additionally been given by the researchers with respect to the life on our planet and furthermore the historical backdrop of the universe. Anyway it is still everything considered to accept the case made by the researcher that they have settled all the secrets or will unravel all the puzzles very soon. This adds up to a damage to science as thusly, they become like the strict fundamentalists, who are scorned by them. Due to the because of the effect of research and innovation on the progressions occurring in the general public and furthermore in transit we live, it can't be guaranteed by the researchers any longer that science is impartial and therefore, they are required to think about the moral just as the social parts of science. Science can't offer guidance in regards to the qualities and the significance of life. Reason 3: Science is ground-breaking and it has made the information because of which we can call an individual most of the way around the globe or to make high rises. However, other than these, science has additionally helped us in addressing significant inquiries like how the gap in the ozone layer has been made, how the yields can be shielded from bugs, who were the developmental progenitors of people and the territories that may be hit by a tidal wave after a quake. Because of the wide scope of inquiries with which science gives, apparently the span of size is perpetual. Anyway there are sure clear constraints of science and it can't contribute in mysticism. Reason 4: Although, science assumes a constrained job, still it has a crucial job in molding the virtues and furthermore helping us in encircling more astute decisions. Proof and reason permit us to analyze moral qualities normally and straightforwardly. It is had confidence in such manner that the mainstream social orders have just built up the dependable moral standards and along these lines science can help us in managing moral situations. Noteworthy force has been given to the people when emotional achievements were gotten on logical wildernesses. Anyway this has additionally brought about complex model problems. It can't be said that science can't uncover a comprehension of the manner by which information can be utilized. Examination of the Language Rhetoric In the initial section of the letter, a publication distributed in Sydney Morning Herald has been refered to in which the Prime Minister, Treasure and the business chiefs of Australia have been denounced as being uneducated. It has been asserted in the letter that the importance of this announcement is that science is the main benchmark of instructed society and simultaneously, the pioneers of the nation are experimentally oblivious. The letter calls attention to that it has additionally been guaranteed an article that on the off chance that science isn't treated with pride, it would likewise adversy affect our prosperity just as on the popular government. Along these lines, the letter calls attention to that this specific publication needs to build up that science is as a rule purposefully debased by our pioneers so as to make a circumstance where individuals can't have an independent perspective. Along these lines, it has been called attention to that there is no reason for the suspicion that science can be considered as a benchmark of instructed society. Then again, science assumes a significant job in creating circumstances or the absolute most noteworthy difficulties looked by the general public like environmental change, lack of food and water and so on.. In such manner it should be noticed that science isn't just an assemblage of realities or speculations. Similarly it doesn't just related with components and recipes on the occasional table. As against the well known discernment, a specific perspective is given by logical information. Similarly, science additionally supports suspicion and simultaneously, it furnishes a guide with the assistance of which, bogus cases that are made by publicists, organizations and lawmakers can be assessed. Surely there are sure impediments of science. For instance, moral decisions are not made by science. In this way the inquiry if killing can be considered as the proper thing doesn't fall under the collection of science. Similarly, the general privileges of the people just as the privileges of creatures are critical inquiries however these inquiries can't be replied with the assistance of logical information and research. Albeit size can assume a significant job in finding out about terminal sicknesses and simultaneously, science can likewise help us in knowing the historical backdrop of human rights. Similarly, science doesn't make tasteful decisions. Also, despite the fact that the researchers are concerned how the logical disclosures are utilized by the individuals, it can't be demonstrated by science how the logical information ought to be utilized. In such manner, it additionally should be noticed that in the event of each noteworthy logical turn of events, there are both positive just as negative uses in which such logical information can be utilized. In this manner, while science depicts a ton of things about the world, it is for the individuals to choose how such information ought to be utilized. Suggestions: As the logical numbness related with countless extraordinary huge and occasions is upsetting, a pattern can be seen among the ground-breaking legislators and the business chiefs as per which, the logical proof is denied or criticized by them. Then again, because of the hugeness of science and innovation in understanding just as building up the answers for the most genuine difficulties looked by the general public like environmental change, food and water shortage, it is imperative to perceive what sort of message is sent by the pioneers to their kin. It additionally should be seen what sort of message is sent by the pioneers to the naive youthful Australians who are being acquainted with logical thinking in their study halls. Regardless of whether these understudies choose later on that they won't proceed with the investigation of science at the University, it can in any case be trusted that the understudies will have at any rate an essential comprehension of the logical ideas because of which they will have the option to settle on educated choices in regards to critical issues throughout their life like their wellbeing, condition and financial aspects during their whole life. It can't be denied that logical reasoning is required if there should be an occurrence of everything done by us yet there are numerous individuals who trust it to be colorful. Subsequently at long last it tends to be said that science can't be considered as the benchmark of society and yet if there should be an occurrence of the current that it very well may be said that the letter is one-sided towards the pessimism of science.

The Immortal Like of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot - Free Essay Example

The Immortal Like of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, summarizes the life of Henrietta Lacks, as well as the way her life changed the world forever. The thought of enjoying a book that, at its core, is about medical research did not occur to me. However, after reading the book I must say that it was actually enjoyable, fitting well with our class. I did find the more than 300 pages quite a bit more than I could handle, especially in an electronic format. I ended up finding the book at the library and had a much easier time. Overall, I feel that genetics can be a daunting subject, but this book did help drive home some basic concepts covered in our other reading, tests, and assignments. Following a pregnancy, Henrietta Lacks experienced persistent abdominal pain and unusual bleeding which she believed could be an ectopic pregnancy. Being African American, the only hospital near her that would see her was Johns Hopkins Hospital, some distance away. Doctor Howard Jones accepted care for Henrietta at the hospital and examined her, leading to the discovery of cervical tumor. The author suggests that Dr. Jones hadnt seen anything like this before and removed a small tissue sample to by biopsied. These samples were sent to George Gey, a biologist at Johns Hopkins, and after being studied for a short time, the remnants of the tissue sample were placed in storage and labeled HeLa, the name posthumously assigned to these cells. The results showed that the tumor was cancerous and all this happened without Henrietta or her family knowing exactly what was happening and why. The HeLa sample in storage was later shared with colleagues at various institutions, and it was quickly discovered that the cells taken from Henrietta Lacks had a very unique quality: they seemed immortal in that they proliferated quickly and indefinitely outside the body. This uniqueness gave these HeLa cells an extraordinarily important place in research in that various diseases and treatments could be tested on live human cells without affecting the person they belong to. After unwittingly providing science with an immeasurable gift, and without consenting to anything beyond the exam by Dr. Jones, Henrietta Lacks passed away in 1951. In 1952, researchers at a different hospital began tests involving the Polio virus on HeLa cells. A small sample of cells were used to produce more, identical copies of the HeLa cells, allowing a wider variety of tests to be performed, and significantly reduced the risk of running out of the needed cells. It was these tests and the associated research that led to the eventual Polio vaccine, saving countless lives and providing future generations a means to prevent future outbreaks. Despite continued breakthroughs and increased knowledge as to why HeLa cells were different, the true reason was not discovered until much later, after decades of ongoing research. HeLa cells continued to be studied by scientists everywhere, when in the 1980s a virologist named Harald Hausen discovered HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), and sees that some strains of HPV may lead to cancer. According to the author, there are more than one hundred strains of HPV, but that only 13 of them lead to cancer. Of these 13 strains, HPV 18 is discovered to be the most virulent and a vaccine is developed to prevent HPV. The reason this is important is that in the case of Henrietta Lacks, HPV had inserted itself into her existing DNA, turning off a specific gene responsible for suppressing tumor formation and growth. In the case of HeLa cells, this meant uncontrolled, endless growth that defied what was understood at the time. Normal human cells have a finite life span, meaning they can only divide a certain number of times before they die. As these cells divide, the ends of normal chromosomes (telomeres) shorten with each division. It is when these telomeres get too short or run out completely that cell division stops and people pass away. Also controlling human lifespan is telomerase, an enzyme that helps to rebuild the telomeres and prolong cell-division and life. It Normally, telomerase works at a rate that prevents telomeres from maintaining their length indefinitely, but in the case of Henrietta Lacks, HPV had created a situation in which telomerase regenerated constantly and at a rate fast enough to prolong cell-division far beyond a normal timeframe. As mentioned previously, Henreitta Lacks had no knowledge of what Dr. Jones had intended to do with her tissue sample, and she would not be the last to experience this situation. In the 1970s, a man named John Moore visited the UCLA medical center having recently been diagnosed with a type of cancer known as Hairy Cell Leukemia. According to the Mayo Clinic, hairy cell leukemia is a rare, slow-growing cancer of the blood in which your bone marrow makes too many B cells (lymphocytes), a type of white blood cell that fights infection. These excess B cells are abnormal and look hairy under a microscope (Hairy cell leukemia, 2018). The physician who treated Mr. Moore had ordered samples of blood, bone marrow, and other body fluids be taken in attempts to guide decisions related to Mr. Moores treatment. Moore did sign a consent for the tests as well as a splenectomy, as physicians felt that Mr. Moores spleen would swell dangerously and that the risk of leaving it in was greater than that of removal. The consent also stated that the hospital could dispose of any tissue removed. The test results that the UCLA physician had ordered came back and showed that Mr. Moores cells were unique, and that they secreted proteins that stimulated white blood cell growth. As Moores treatment continued, he discovered that physicians had used his cells to create a commercially viable, marketable cell-line without his knowledge. It was only a new consent form with wording that suggested he waive his rights to any money generated from this cell-line that revealed to Mr. Moore that his cells were used. Moore signed the consent initially but then changed his mind after discovering that the physician who ordered the tests and procedures that acquired his cells was set to receive substantial monetary gain, and that a patent had been placed on the new cell-line. It was decided that, because Mr. Moore had signed the original consent which authorized the hospital to get rid of the tissue removed from him, he had no right to the patented cell-line that was developed without his knowledge, and that having signed the first consent, was not required to sign an additional consent regarding the use of tissue he consented to discarding. Despite the court ruling, similar events today would likely lead to different outcomes as consents are required for using any material, even unidentifiable genetic information, in any research or development of any new medication or treatment. In addition, should discoveries such as this come up in a similar fashion, physicians and researchers would likely have to disclose possible financial gains to avoid lawsuits as the use of tissues/genetic material taken from individuals who did consent to use of, but not patents or sales of their samples would likely favor plaintiffs.

Spinner Dolphin Facts

Spinner dolphins were  named for their unique behavior of leaping and spinning. These spins can involve more than four body revolutions. Fast Facts: Spinner Dolphin Size: 6-7 feet and 130-170 poundsHabitat: warm tropical and subtropical waters in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian OceansClassification: Kingdom: Animalia, Class: Mammalia, Family: DelphinidaeLifespan: 20 to 25 yearsDiet: Fish and squid; locate prey using echolocationFun Fact: Spinner dolphins gather in pods that can number into the thousands and are known for spinning and leaping.   Identification Spinner dolphins are medium-sized dolphins with long, slender  beaks. Coloration varies depending on where they live. They often have a striped appearance with a dark gray back, gray flanks and white underside.  In some adult males, the dorsal fin looks as if has been stuck on backwards. These animals may associate with other marine life, including humpback whales, spotted dolphins and yellowfin tuna. Classification There are 4 subspecies of spinner dolphin: Grays spinner dolphin (Stenella  longirostris  longirostris)Eastern spinner dolphin (S. l.  orientalis)Central American spinner dolphin (S.l.  centroamericana)Dwarf spinner dolphin (S.l.  roseiventris) Habitat and Distribution Spinner dolphins are found in warm tropical and subtropical waters in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Different spinner dolphin subspecies may prefer different habitats depending on where they live. In Hawaii, they live in shallow, sheltered bays, in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, they live on the high seas far from land and often associate with yellowfin tuna, birds and pantropical spotted dolphins. Dwarf spinner dolphins live in areas with shallow coral reefs, where they feed during the day on fish and invertebrates. Click here for a sighting map for spinner dolphins. Feeding Most spinner dolphins rest during the day and feed at night. Their preferred prey are fish and squid, which they find using echolocation.  During echolocation, the dolphin emits high-frequency sound pulses from an organ (the melon) in its head. The sound waves bounce off objects around it and are received back into the dolphins lower jaw. They are then transmitted to the inner ear and interpreted to determine the size, shape, location and distance of prey. Reproduction The spinner dolphin has a year-round breeding season After mating, the females gestation period is about 10 to 11 months, after which a single calf about two and a half feet long is born. Calves nurse for one to two years. The lifespan for spinner dolphins is estimated at about 20 to 25 years. Conservation The spinner dolphin is listed as data deficient on the IUCN Red List. Spinner dolphins in the Eastern Tropical Pacific were caught by the thousands in purse seine nets targeting tuna, although their populations are slowly recovering due to restrictions placed on those fisheries. Other threats include entanglement or bycatch in fishing gear, targeted hunts in the Caribbean, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, and coastal development which affects the sheltered bays that these dolphins inhabit in some areas during the day. Comparison of Still I Rise and Realities of a Black Woman Compare and Contrast the poems Still I Rise By Maya Angelou and Of course when they ask about the Realities of black women by Grace Nichols. Still I Rise written by Maya Angelou and Of course when they ask about the Realities of black woman written by Grace Nichols, are the two poems that I will be comparing and writing about. These poems are expressing the opinions of how white people would like to see or how they see black women. I understand that the word culture means a wide range of ideas, knowledge and beliefs. The word Culture can also mean a way of life, or set of†¦show more content†¦Maya Angelou opens her poems with You may write me down in history. This gives an impact of accusing, that the poet is accusing the reader of the lies carried out against her in the past. Maya Angelou is addressing the reader directly by using the pronoun You this makes the reader automatically feel involved. With your bitter, twisted lies. This gives us the idea of her races past being untrue because the word lies has been used. Adjectives have been used to reinforce the word lies with Bitter and Twisted. These adjectives have been used to describe, the lies written down about black people in history. The word Bitter suggests that the lies are hostile and resentful. The word Twisted suggests that the lies are cruel and perverted. The woman is a very ambitious person and wants to put the lies about her races past behind her and Rise above them Leaving behind Up from a past thats rooted in pain are two examples of how the poet shows she wants to leave the lies behind, these have used to show the reader what she is rising from and that she is rising from the lies. Also no matter what happens, she will over come her races lied about past but at the same time still be proud that she is a member of her race. The purpose of the poem is to stress the themes of racism and self-acceptance. Maturity Levels Increase And Decrease In Characters In Works Of Litera Essay Example For Students

Maturity Levels Increase And Decrease In Characters In Works Of Litera Essay ture and also throughout ones real life. Its hard for the maturity level of the person to stay the same. Ron Jones The Acorn People, The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens and The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh clearly show the degree of maturity in characters in a work of literature. Ron Jones in The Acorn People shows a low maturity level when first arriving at the summer camp, but later his maturity level increased into a higher level. Laura Wingfields character in The Glass Menagerie was extremely shy throughout most of the play. By the end of the play, Laura was able to hold a conversation with her old crush, Jim OConnor. Sydney Carton of A Tale of Two Cities showed a rise is his maturity level when he took the place of Charles Darnay in the prison cell so that Lucie (Sydneys true love) would be able to be with her husband. Aimee Thanatogenos of The Loved One. A person can be described as mature when he or she has grown physically and menta lly, and has demonstrated the ability to be responsible for his/her actions. Whether its an increase or decrease of maturity level, a change in it always shows a change in character and attitude. Ron Jones maturity level rocketed after he became a camp counselor at Camp Wiggin and he also had a major attitude change along with that. Ron had placed himself in the camp counselor position merely for a good-paying job. In college he was an athlete, and playing with kids all day, swimming, and taking long hikes had also drawn him to the job. Little did he know this session of camp, was for the handicapped kids. Ron, along with the other counselors, were not trained for these kinds of tasks that they had to deal with, with the disabled kids and by the end of the first afternoon- Ron wanted out. His attitude was negative towards the situation he was put in and he felt that he would not be able to get close with these kids. The next day was better for him and throughout the next few days he slowly got to know and love the kids. Ron came to realize that this camp was a place for children and their expectations and fantasies for life(46), no matter if they were handicapped or not. Ron Jones maturity level grew and grew each day as he worked with these kids. By the end of that session of camp he had a complete attitude change and his degree of maturity had increased a great deal. That change for Ron Jones was a change only for the good, just as Laura Wingfields was. The character of Laura Wingfield definitely showed an obvious increase of maturity level in the play, The Glass Menagerie. Laura was an extremely shy girl, it was a kind of sickness she had. Her mother sent her to Rubicams Business College in hopes that Laura would be able to hold a job and not have to depend on a husband. The class terrified her to the point of making her physically ill so Laura stopped going to the class. She did not have the maturity level of an adult and was not able to handle a simple situation such as that one. Another sign of a low maturity level was Lauras collection of glass menagerie. A girl in her late 20s owning a collection of glass menagerie is quite particular, and not very common, but Laura had one! Laura found out that there was to be a gentleman caller one night and she became extremely nervous, but when she then found out this gentleman caller was Jim OConnor and old high-school crush she couldnt handle it. She could barely even open the door for J im and Tom when they were trying to enter the house. While Tom, Jim, and Amanda ate dinner together, Laura laid on the couch because seeing her old crush made her feel ill. Soon, after dinner, Jim joined Laura for a little conversation and which in the beginning she was incredibly quiet but then loosened up to him. She began talking and soon enough they kissed! Laura engaging in a conversation with her old crush showed a significant increase in her maturity level. She did not faint during it or become physically sick, and she even had some fun with Jim. Lauras maturity level went from minimal to almost maximal in one night and that is a great change.
